The Commercial Strategies and the Product Range of the Music Publishing House Julius Heinrich Zimmermann

Abstract

The assortment of the publishing house Julius Heinrich Zimmerman is considered in the context of the commercial strategies of his enterprise. Accordingly, the printed editions of the popular music prove to be particularly profitable. They primarily contain the Russian petty‑bourgeois piano songs in their genre variants. In addition, the publications of piano‑vocal scores, which were not always financially successful, are studied. A detailed representation of Zimmerman’s business communication can be reconstructed using contracts, agreements and correspondence with Mily Balakirev as an example.
