«Очерк жизни Генделя» выдающегося английского историка музыки Чарльза Бёрни (1726-1814) является составной частью его «Отчета о музыкальных представлениях в память о Генделе…», написанного после лондонского фестиваля к столетию композитора (1784). Очерк представляет собой ценный исторический документ: его автор, будучи лично знаком с Генделем в последние пятнадцать лет жизни композитора, включил в него не только биографические факты, собранные из различных источников, но также собственные свидетельства и наблюдения. Будучи эрудированным человеком, Бёрни помещает жизнь и творчество Генделя в широкий культурный контекст эпохи: в очерке содержатся сведения о ведущих исполнителях, с которыми он сотрудничал, а также приводятся ссылки на важнейшие литературные сочинения — эссе, памфлеты, трактаты, — в которых отразились музыкально-театральные реалии того времени. Обладая несомненным писательским дарованием, Бёрни создает одновременно исторический труд и литературное сочинение, отличающееся немалыми стилистическими достоинствами.
