Andrew Lloyd-Webber’s “Requiem” in the Light of Historical Tendencies of the Genre Development

Abstract

“Requiem” by Andrew Lloyd-Webber is characterized as work realizing some significant tendencies in the
genre development during 1960–1980s. The researcher accentuated the role of social-cultural and aesthetic
processes conducive to formation of the many-sided conception of “Requiem”. The influence of noted
processes — “cultural sacralization”, attraction to global concepts, stylistic universalization — on Lloyd-
Webber’s creative works on the whole and especially his interpretation of the mentioned genre is elucidated.
The author successively disclosed embodiment of the anti-war (“political”) and “chamber” memorial (“lyrical”)
components of the artistic conception of the “Requiem”. Special attention is given to imaginative interpretation
of solo parts, dramaturgic motivation of individual composition decisions in the named composition. The
most important parallels between the “Requiem” and some outstanding 19th and 20th century works belonging
to this genre are marked.
