Quantitative Mode of the Antiquity

Abstract

On the south outer wall of the Athenian Treasury at Delphi is found an inscription with musical notation. It is now commonly described as a Paean to Apollo written by a certain Limenios from Athens (2nd c. B. C.). The poem long attracts attention of philologists and musicologists. Of the special interest of musicians is its exquisite albeit strict composition based on alteration of the so called early Greek modes. The modal structure itself reveals striking parallels with early Greek poetry based on quantitative metre..
