The Opening Ceremony of the Moscow Conservatory (September 1, 1866). An Attempt of Reconstruction

Abstract

In the article is surveyed and analyzed in detail the very first meaningful event of the Moscow Conservatory history —  the opening ceremony. On the basis of journalistic reports of the Russian and Western European press, compiled by correspondents who were personally present at the celebrations, the musical picture of the holiday is reconstructed: the programs, repertoire, artist names, including participation in the ceremony of the Synodal choir are clarified. For the first time complete versions of speeches by leading persons of the Russian music society with comments are reproduced. Special attention is paid to the critical analysis of N. D. Kashkin’s recollections, in particular, the episode of P. I. Tchaikovsky’s playing on piano of the
Overture to «Ruslan and Lyudmila» Glinka. The historicity of this episode is questioned. The results of the study show the urgent need for a critical attitude and revision of primary sources.
