Concertos for 8 Voices by Vasily Titov, and the Composer Vasily Gusev

Abstract

The article introduces a cycle of eight concertos by Vasily Titov for eight voices into scientific use. Ten sources of the text are analyzed, five of which are lifetime and five — posthumous. By dating the manuscripts and identifying the earliest sources, the authentic structure of the cycle is established.
In a number of sources, the penitential concerto (Vindicate me, my God), composed by Vasily Gusev, is attached to this cycle. The article refutes the point of view by V. V. Protopopov, who considered this concerto to be a work by Titov. Arguments in favor of Gusev’s authorship are given.
The Appendix publishes the score of the first concert of the cycle You are my Lord, Christ, restored from lifetime sources. The given score is compared with a later copy of the same concerto (1743), which bears traces of late-Baroque editing.
