The International Congress of Musicology in New York (1939). Documents From the Correspondence of Organizers and Scholars

Abstract

This continuation of the research on American contacts to Russian-Swiss musicologist Jacques Handschin, publishes and discusses some documents from his correspondence with Gustav Reese, dated 1939. Reese invites Handschin to the musicological congress in New York; Handschin hesitates and finally declines to attend. The analysis of this correspondence as well as of others documents sheds light on the history of international musicology on the eve of World War II.
