“To Compose Sound”: to the Problem of Musical Organization in "Traiettoria" by Marco Stroppa

Abstract

The article covers some aspects of the compositional method of Marco Stroppa on the example of Traiettoria for piano and computer-generated sounds. The composer solves the problem of “composing sound” by building a dialectic of the relationship between electronic and acoustic instruments within a composition of a mixed type. The stages of pre-compositional work are the organization of spatial taxonomy, the search and fixing of complexes of sounds that correspond to the concept of “sound entities”, or “Organisms of Musical Information”, as well as the development of a musical notation system that promotes the “visualization” of a musical idea.
