Jacques Handschin and the First Post-War Meetings of the International Musicological Society (Based on the Scholar’s Correspondence)

Abstract

This article says about an episode in the history of the International Musicological Society (IMS). It continues my study of the corpus of letters of the Russian-Swiss musicologist and organist Jacques Handschin (1886, Moscow — 1955, Basel). From 1936, he was a member of the IMS Directory. In 1948 and 1949, Basel hosted the first international meetings of musicologists after the war: the Directory Conference and the 4th Congress of the IMS. The atmosphere in international musicological circles was tense. An attempt to influence the undesirable course of events led Handschin to conflict and resignation from the Directory. This article presents some previously unknown epistolary sources. These documents allow to study the events from the immediate experience of their participants. They also show what opportunities our predecessor colleagues found to re-establish international scientific work in a difficult period of history, and what difficulties they faced.
