Music and Sound in the Environment of Traditional Rural Holiday (Based on the Field Research of Tchaikovsky Moscow State Conservatory in the Lipetsk Region in 1990s)

Abstract

The article deals with the functionality and specific features of traditional music within the context of rural holidays in the Lipetsk region of Russia during the second half of the 20th century. The research is focused on the carnival, comic and entertaining elements of holiday celebrations and on those species of musical folklore that most naturally fit into this environment. Based on field ethnographic descriptions, the connections are traced between modern holiday behaviour of the rural communities and forms of traditional choreography; the role of instrumental music and musicians for the culture of rural holidays are described as well as phenomena of syncretic mixing of archaic ritual and entertaining elements.
