Beethoven’s letter to the Emperor Alexander I from March 26, 1823, and other documents from the Archive of Foreign Policy of the Russian Empire (Moscow), related to the subscription of the Russian Imperial court to a handwritten copy of the “Missa Solemnis” are published here for the first time with their facsimiles and supplied with an extensive essay enlightening the initial stage of reception in Russia of the work that Beethoven considered the most outstanding creation of his spirit.
