Abstract
A study of the responses to the Handel centenary festival in numerous English newspapers of the time can greatly add to the view of him today. Newspaper notes and letters to the editor, whose authors were not bound by any obligations, can add a variety of colors to the magnificent picture of a musical festival of national importance, painted by its official "chronicler".
We owe the opportunity to learn about the coverage of the festival in contemporary periodicals to the Reverend Charles Burney the Younger, who has amassed an extensive collection of them, now in the British Library.
