Abstract
The problem of character, one of the fundamental problems in the 18th century musical theater, is considered by the example of Handel’s operas. Despite the popular opinion that the baroque opera is usually characterized by typicality rather than creation of individual characters, the author believes that Handel’s theater was developing towards psychological insight and combined both old and new principles.
