This treatise is the only source in all Ancient Greek literature dedicated solely to history of music. Written at the turn of 1st and 2nd centuries CE, it actually includes evidences of much earlier periods — citations of lost works by Aristoxenos, Pherecrates, Heraclides Ponticus, Glaucus of Rhegium, and other authors. Plutarch makes mention of many prominent musicians of the past, describes their activities and their masterpieces, and supplies details of composition techniques specific to different music genera. He also addresses more general issues of traditionalism and novelty in music. This edition contains an introductory article (with overview of authorship and dating problems) by Sergey Lebedev and a new Russian translation of the original treatise (with explanatory notes) by Vyacheslav Tsypin.
