Revival of the Cossack Mamay-Bandurist Image and Some Specifities of the Modern Cultural Policy of Ukraine

Abstract

The article is devoted to the Ukrainian folklore mythological character —  the Zaporozhye Cossack Mamay, whose image is depicted in numerous Ukrainian folk paintings. The iconography of Mamay, his attributes are analyzed, and the multi-ethnic (basically Turkic) layers of his image (Korkut —  Köroğlu —  Sufi-kizil-bash) are consistently revealed. The identification of Mamay lutes varieties reveals not only the multi-lay-ered nature of his image, but also reflects the richness of the historical lute instruments of Ukraine. The image has not lost its popularity, and at present he is assigned the status of a cultural hero and even a national spiritual symbol.
