Biography

Born in 1941 in Mulhouse. A philosopher by training, from 2008 to 2011 he was President of the French Association of Friends of Albert Schweitzer (AFAAS), founded in Paris in 1957 in the presence of Dr. Schweitzer and transferred to Strasbourg in 1980. From 1990 to 2003, he edited the Études Schweitzeriennes magazine, and since 2003 — the Cahiers Albert Schweitzer magazine. Jean-Paul Sorg has published two collections of poems — Undergrund in Alsatian and Suite printanière in French, as well as the essay Le droit au jardin and a large number of articles and research papers in various journals, from Budderflade and New German Notebooks to Revue des Deux Mondes. He translated and edited a number of Schweitzer’s works, including Six essais sur Gœthe, Les jugements psychiatriques sur Jésus (M. D. thesis), Agir (21 sermons on missions and humanitarianism), and also Walter Munz’s two books on Schweitzer: Albert Schweitzer dans la mémoire des Africains and Cœur de gazelle et peau d’hippopotame — about the last years of Albert Schweitzer in Lambaréné, Gabon, and the evolution of his hospital to the present day. In 1995, J.–P. Sorg acted as compiler of the annotated anthology Humanisme et Mystique which contains Schweitzer’s texts on happiness, life, civilization, humanity, respect for the individual, Christianity, beauty, mysticism, peace and other subjects. In 2005–2011, he published the 1901–1912 correspondence between Albert Schweitzer and Helene Breslau in 3 vols. with foreword and notes (Colmar: Bentzinger)..
