Evgenia V.  Khazdan

Ethnomusicologist, Ph.D. (History of Arts), Senior Researcher of the Russian Institute for the History of Arts (St. Petersburg). After graduating from St.  Petersburg Conservatory she undertook her postgraduate studies at the Russian Institute for the History of Arts. In 2008 she  defended her Ph.D.  thesis  Nigun as a Phenomenon of Traditional Jewish Music Culture. Khazdan is a Member of Saint-Petersburg Composers’ Union. She is an organizer of the study workshops in the Russian Institute of History of Arts. Khazdan edits  Vremennik Zubovskogo Instituta journal, various music editions and collections of academic articles on ethnic music. She helped to organize the international workshop on the music of Eastern European Jews  KlezFest  in Petersburg,  teaching workshops  Art and Tradition,  and study workshops in the Russian Institute of History of Arts as well as other workshops and events. Her academic interests include the music tradition of Eastern European Jews, particularly Yiddish songs and paraliturgical singing of Ashkenazi  Jews,  the  history  of  study  of Jewish folklore in the USSR, and Jewish themes in the music of Russian and Soviet composers.
