Distinguished Professor of Music at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Her numerous writings on Arnold Schoenberg’s theories and works include The Musical Idea and The Logic, Technique and Art of Its Presentation (1995, 2006, 2012), Coherence, Counterpoint, Instrumentation, Instruction in Form (1994), and Schoenberg’s String Quartet in F-Sharp Minor, Opus 10: A Norton Critical Score (2006). Neff has served as Editor-in-Chief of Music Theory Spectrum, the premiere American journal in music theory (2009–2012). She has received research awards from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation (1981, 2011), The Arnold Schönberg Center (Austria) (2003–2012), and the National Endowment for the Humanities (1993). In 1998–1999, Neff was a J. William Fulbright Senior Scholar at Moscow State Conservatory. Currently she is preparing an edition of Schoenberg’s writings on counterpoint for Oxford University Press and is one of the editors of Reassessing The Rite at 100: 1913/2013 for Indiana University Press.
