Biography

Graduated with an honors degree from the Tchaikovsky Moscow State Conservatory and then from postgraduate courses in musicology and organ performance. Ph.D. thesis: «The Transition from the Modality to the Tonal System in the 16th–17th Centuries Western Music» (1981). She worked for a long period as a Senior Lecturer in the Music Theory Department at the same institution and was the organizer of the first international conference held in Russia on music of the preClassical period. In the 1980s she worked out the first in Russia course of studies on the history of notation for musicologists and an integrated course of music theory for performers. In the 1980s and 1990s she gave guest lectures in Poland, Portugal and the US and published over fifty articles in the academic journals. In 1990 Dr. Baranova with her family moved to Switzerland; from this time she combined teaching, performing and scientific studies, working in the Escuela Superior de Musica Reina Sofia in Madrid and in Basel Musical Academy as well as playing in duet with her husband, cellist Ivan Monighetti, and in Early music ensembles. In recent years she lives in Basel and undertakes research at the Paul Sacher Stiftung.
